What to expect when shopping for an engagement ring at Moyer Jewelers
It’s intimidating, I know, I have been there. You found the right girl and now you need to find the right ring. When you come to Moyer Jewelers you should expect to find a comfortable and low pressure experience. We want to help you find the right ring so the first thing you should expect is a quick interview.
- What shape of diamond would you like to present or is she expecting?
- Do you want diamonds to the sides of a center diamond?
- What color of metal would she like best?
Once we have these general answers in hand we can begin to look through our collection of diamond rings. Hopefully we can find something from this selection but if not we have a network of designers and manufacturers as well as some custom capabilities including our in store ring modification program called CounterSketch. Whatever the design we will find the perfect ring.

Sometimes the diamond comes first and sometimes the ring, but in either case finding the right diamond is a priority. It begins with choosing a shape. In most cases you will be choosing a diamond from among our loose diamond collection. Our goal is to provide you clear examples of diamond qualities and sizes from which to select. In some cases we will have the proper selection of diamonds already in the store, but in others we will need to contact our network of diamond suppliers to have them send some in. Don’t worry, this only takes a day or two.
Once you have found the right ring and the right diamond we will set the diamond in our in house studio. The rest is up to you – deciding how to make a memorable presentation.
Gents Wedding Bands
Men are tough! The wedding band is often the first and only piece of jewelry a man will wear, so it must feel right. We have a wide variety of both styles and metals to choose among. Most men haven’t lately been going for the classic gold band, although we have these, but rather some kind of design, and we definitely have these. And don’t limit yourself to gold. Other choices of metals we can show you are the precious metals of platinum and palladium or the alternative metals of titanium, tungsten and cobalt.
Local Trends
While not the center of style like New York or Paris, State College has its own set of bridal trends. We are currently seeing the following trends in bridal rings and bands:
- The Classic Solitaire – a wonderful and classic design but also the best way to maximize your budget.
- The Halo – probably the most popular current trend in jewelry, including State College. The halo is a great way to make a diamond look bigger.
- Platinum – the pure, eternal white metal is by far the most popular choice for women of all ages.

- Lori is our resident expert in all things jewelry. She holds a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as well as having over 27 years of experience in the jewelry business. She personally works with manufacturers and diamond cutters to select the fine diamonds, colored gems and jewelry you see at Moyer Jewelers. Her vast knowledge of diamonds and vast network of designers can assist you in selecting the “right” ring.
- Chris
- Chris wasn’t always in the jewelry business so he knows how intimidating the process of buying an engagement ring can be – he has gone through the process himself. He also knows it doesn’t have to be. In his time at Moyer Jewelers he has striven to make the engagement ring buying process a happy and low pressure experience. It should be an exciting time, not a nerve wracking experience. After 6 years of experience and several diamond courses from the GIA he still remembers what it was like to be that guy walking in to the jewelry store to find the right ring. He would be happy to help you find the right ring.
- Jim
- Jim’s over two decades of experience at Moyer Jewelers includes successfully completing GIA courses in diamonds and diamond grading as well as helping many, many couples select the perfect engagement ring. Believing diamonds are one of nature’s greatest achievement, as well as unique and fascinating he would love to share his expertise in selecting a ring and diamond that is both unique and perfect.
- Jamie
- Jamie is one of Moyer Jewelers goldsmiths and designers but has also spent a considerable amount of time helping people select and design their engagement ring. Jamie’s expertise comes from a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in Metals from Penn State, 3 years apprenticing with a Master Goldsmith and over 7 years designing and making jewelry. She uses her background to create not just rings but wearable pieces of art. She can literally take you from start to finish with your ring.
- Cate
- Cate is one of the newest members to the Moyer Jewelers family. With 7+ years of jewelry experience she has a sentimental yet matter of fact philosophy to assist you in your most important purchase. Understanding the proper mechanics of structure and design has helped Cate transition from sales to production through her years in the industry as she joins the Moyer team as a goldsmith. A background in sculpture along with a bachelor’s degree in art gives Cate the tools to have a keen eye when selecting or designing your engagement ring. Cate will take time to understand your needs because this important purchase must not only be right, but needs to feel right.
- Sohayla
- New to the Moyer Jewelers team, Sohayla has had a life long love for fine jewelry and diamonds. Having just graduated from Penn State with design related degrees, Sohayla brings a fresh perspective to the process of selecting and/or customizing the perfect engagement ring and wedding band. Eager to share in this exciting time with couples, let Sohayla’s knowledge of diamonds guide you to the perfect ring.

- If there is one thing Susie loves it is diamonds. Whether it be a diamond necklace, earrings or THE ring she will bring her excitement of all things that sparkle to the experience.
